Writing Study Course: For Any Subject (Literacy Across The Curriculum)

This writing course is designed to be used with any school subject. It includes a variety of writing frames and planning activities that pupils can easily use to produce different types of writing. There are three separate booklets which represent three different levels. These are Initial Level, Higher Level and Advanced Level and the tasks in each are differentiated accordingly. The names are chosen for motivational reasons so that all pupils feel they are working to a good standard. The types of writing included at each level are: Informative Writing Personal Writing Writing Instructions Persuasive Writing Imaginative Writing Discursive Writing Most of these types of writing can be used along with topics studied in any subject. Staff may not feel that some types of writing fit their course, for example imaginative writing, so you may choose to only use some units in some subjects. This is a great resource to promote literacy across the curriculum. With numerous subjects following the same structure for writing and with them all completing this course, your pupils are more likely to improve their writing skills.

This resource is designed to be used with Chapter 6 of the novel Private Peaceful by Michael Morpurgo. This chapter is titled ‘Nearly Five To One’. The main event of this chapter is the disappearance of Big Joe. This resource contains a powerpoint presentation that is used to recap on the novel’s previous chapters, to check the pupils’ comprehension of this chapter and to generate a discussion on how the pupils think the characters have developed in the story so far, and/or how their opinion of them has changed. This resource also includes some worksheets. These contain a lesson(s) plan, 2 activities and some extension work. The first activity asks pupils to write about how they think the characters have developed in the story so far, and/or how their opinion of them has changed . The second is a functional skills task which asks pupils to write an advertisement for a newspaper asking people to help search for Big Joe. The extension asks pupils to complete a table for 5 characters from the story by adding as many suitable adjectives as they can t describe them. They are asked to use a thesaurus to do this. This resource should take at least two lessons to complete, but it could be used for more depending on how much time you allow for the discussions. This unit of work comprises of a short story about a new pupil coming to school who is considered different by the others. This should lead to some discussion about what makes people considered different. The pupil is bullied throughout the day, with the bullying getting progressively worse. The reader learns the bullies own life issues. The story teaches an important moral message and leads to many possible discussions. Many of these are introduced in a worksheet asking the pupil to note their thoughts on the story in detail, with many questions and discussion points raised. The unit then becomes an imaginative writing unit. Various elements of the short story are used as a springboard for the pupils to plan then write their own story about a new pupil coming to a school and being considered different. The unit could be used as part of an English course and should last for a half term if taught once a week. It could be used in late Primary School or early Secondary School. It is also a very good unit to teach to older SEN pupils.

This resource consists of two activities for Functional Skills Entry Level 3 speaking and listening. It is for staff use, providing a topic for a discussion and a checklist to assess whether pupils have passed the test or not. Although this assessment follows the theme of Christmas, it can easily be edited for any topic and used multiple times. There are two pages for each activity, one for teachers to assess multiple pupils and one for assessing one pupil which can be placed in this pupil’s file. In the first activity students have to imagine that they are organising a Christmas dinner for a large group of people. They have to work in a group, discussing what food, drink and activities they should have and select a venue.The second speaking and listening activity asks students to organise a Christmas cinema trip for their school/college. They have to work together to choose which film they will go to see. As a class, you could watch a selection of film trailers and discuss them to prepare the students for this activity. These two resources help pupils to write well punctuated sentences while adding adverbs to their work. Clear examples are given to students in the form of word lists and example sentences. The activities use strong visuals to stimulate the pupils ideas and imaginations. The students begin by being given simple sentences with images that they have to rewrite to include adverbs. Students then progressively write with less support until they are asked to write a series of sentences including adverbs independently.
